Rural Accommodation - House to rent (Cottages & Country Houses) | Medike Mountain Reserve

MEDIKE is situated in the Limpopo Province about 36 km west of Louis Trichardt (Makhado). This Natural Heritage Site is in the picturesque western Soutpansberg where the Sand River (Mongezi) has cut an impressive gorge through the mountain.

The best way to savour Medike’s rich ecological diversity is on foot. More than 30 km of marked hiking trails meander through forested kloofs, rugged gorges, archaeological sites and mountain streams to waterfalls, spectacular rock formations and a mysterious San shelter with ancient rock art.

The diversity of natural habitats found on Medike affords a large variety of fauna and flora. Nearly 200 bird species have been identified including the Black Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, Lanner Falcon, African Hawk Eagle and the rare Bat Hawk and the Narina Trogon.

Several of Africa’s rare mammals like the leopard, anteater, brown hyena and pangolin is home to Medike. Klipspringer, bushbuck, Sharpe’s grysbok, warthogs, baboons, vervet monkeys, bushbabies and hyraxes are frequently seen.

Medike is also known for its butterflies. The most common reptiles are the endemic Soutpansberg lizard, black mamba and python.

More than 250 tree species including Real Yellowwood, Baobab and the rare Pepperbark provide a haven for keen botanists.

Campfires, a leopard rasping in the distance, star filled nights, eagles soaring above the mountains and true bushveld hospitality will make your Medike sojourn even more memorable.

Accommodation (self-catering or with the option of meals)

Medike Guestbook

\\\\\\\" This has been the highlight of my 3 month stay in South Africa! A truly magical place - definitely worth another visit.\\\\\\\" - Ailene Brockman - Hampshire U.K.

\\\\\\\" The \\\\\\\'bakoond\\\\\\\' and \\\\\\\'donkey\\\\\\\' were sources of great fascination - don\\\\\\\'t ever convert to electricity!\\\\\\\" - Peter, Karen, Claire & Melissa Rowlands - Johannesburg

\\\\\\\" This is a truly exceptional destination - very sensitively restored cottage with nothing overdone or prissy. The landscape is magnificent. Boulder cottage is a work of art. Many thanks.\\\\\\\" - Penny and Justin Carrol, Irish Embassy, Maputo

Come and share the peace and tranquillity of Medike, quoting our guests Ben and Mpizana from Tzaneen:

\\\\\\\" hiking along the river, discovering a bit of Medike\\\\\\\'s history in the rock paintings, startling the innocent buck along the shores, listening to the baboons\\\\\\\' barks as the sun sets, being watched by curious warthog, baking the finest bread in the termite hill, relaxing around a dying fire under a star-filled sky.”
